A Suffolk-based Virginia National Guard unit will mobilize in the next couple of months for what is expected to be a year-long deployment.
Suffolk-based Troop B, 2nd Squadron, 183rd Cavalry, 116th Infantry Brigade Combat team will be assigned to a Winchester-based battalion for the deployment. Units based in Woodstock and Leesburg also are deploying.
Following stateside training and preparation of about seven weeks at Fort Pickett, near Blackstone, and Fort Bliss in Texas, the group will arrive in Southwest Asia as a security force providing access control, tower guards and other security support, according to a press release.
Soldiers in the Suffolk-based unit last deployed in 2011 to Iraq. They also have conducted numerous in-state missions during hazardous weather events.
