One person is dead following a two-vehicle accident on Route 58 westbound near the weigh scales on Thursday afternoon.

The accident happened at 4:51 p.m., according to a press release from city spokeswoman Diana Klink. A Dodge van and a Honda sedan both exited the roadway to the left and struck the trees in the median, according to the release.

The Honda suffered major damage and the driver, who was pronounced dead at the scene, will require extrication.

The adult female driver of the van was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening.

Two westbound lanes were closed immediately after the accident. One lane was initially expected to remain closed until after 8:30 p.m. That was later extended for several more hours as investigators continued their work.
