King’s Fork High School’s girls’ soccer team led Suffolk schools with three All-Region 4A South first team selections, and the Lady Bulldogs’ Mike Marston was named the region’s Coach of the Year.
Suffolk players making the all-region first team included King’s Fork sophomore forward Cydney Nichols, junior midfielder Logan Montel, sophomore defender Skylar Wall and Nansemond River High School sophomore midfielder Kamarie Jewette.
Both the Lady Warriors and Lady Bulldogs faced impressive competition at the regional level, and Marston said, “When we went into the regional meeting, I was not expecting to win Coach of the Year for the region at all.”
But then he discovered that the only coaches up for consideration were the coaches from the four conferences represented that had been named conference Coach of the Year this season.
King’s Fork has undergone a significant transformation in the last two seasons. When this year’s graduating seniors were sophomores, the Lady Bulldogs won two games total. Last year when Marston served as an assistant, they went 11-4-1, and this year with him as head coach, they went 14-4.
“I guess that was probably pretty impressive on my resume,” Marston said, noting the other coaches under consideration likely were not able to benefit from such a stark contrast, heading up more established programs.
King’s Fork had never qualified for regional play before these past two years, and the 14 wins this season was a school record.
“It was absolutely an honor,” Marston said of receiving the coaching accolade. “It’s always great when there’s the opportunity to get recognized by your peers.”
Determining honors were the coaches from the eight regional-qualifying teams.
Cydney Nichols earned greater regional recognition this year after receiving honorable mention last season.
“I expected Cydney to get first team all-region,” Marston said, noting she was one of three strikers in the region to score over 30 goals in 2015.
Nichols finished the season with 33 goals and 16 assists, and she also helped establish her name among regional coaches by being named Player of the Year in the Ironclad Conference.
Logan Montel’s first team accolade is the first regional honor of her career.
Marston noted Montel has made herself known to most coaches in the region via her play, either through school or club soccer. Of her first-team honor, he said he is “proud of her, she’s worked hard, and definitely from a skill standpoint, there’s no question it was well-deserved.”
She finished the season with 16 goals and 18 assists.
Skylar Wall’s capacity late in the season was somewhat limited due to an ankle injury, but it did not keep her from making her first regional accolade a selection to the first team.
Marston pitched her worthiness to the other coaches and said he told them that earlier in the season “she was as dominant on the defensive end as Cydney was on the offensive end.”
Opposing teams scored over one goal only once in eight games before she was injured, including wins over Grassfield High School, Western Branch High School and Nansemond River.
Kamarie Jewette of the Lady Warriors earned the first regional recognition of her career via the first team.
“I was expecting that,” NR coach Kurt Straub said. “She directs everything on the field for me,” and she was the recipient of the team leadership award.
She accumulated nine assists and two goals, but Straub noted that she also got the offense going for most if not all of the team’s goals this season.
Suffolk players making the all-region second team included Lady Warriors sophomore defender Starr Robinson, freshman forward Indiah Hunter, sophomore forward Daijah Norris and Lady Bulldogs sophomore midfielder Rebecca Washburn.
