Joseph Lee Griggs

Joseph Lee Griggs, 90, passed away June 16, 2015, in St. Marys, Ga. He was born in Gates County, N.C., to the late Ocie Lee and Carrie Whitehurst. He was also predeceased by his wife, Emma Virginia Carr; daughter, Shanna Lee Richardson; siblings, Virginia Speight, Myrtle Fowler, Melrose Burnette, Thomas E. Griggs, Charles H. Griggs, C. Leslie Griggs; and great-grandson, Luke Allen Yarborough.
Joseph was a World War II veteran who retired as senior chief radioman with 26 years of service and retired from federal civil service with more than 20 years of service. Throughout his life, he served his Lord through many leadership positions at church, and he served his community as an active member of many civic organizations.
Left to cherish his memory is son, Robert Carr Griggs (Carolyn), of Kingsland, Ga.; grandchildren, Shanna Richardson, of Virginia Beach, Jennifer Gould (Joel), of Huntersville, N.C., John Paul Richardson, of Virginia Beach, Heather Bolling (John), of Maryland Heights, Mo., Todd Neal Lewis Richardson, of Chesapeake, Kelly Beauchamp (James), of Virginia Beach, Amy Melton (Ralph), of Kingsland, Ga., Emma Kathryn Yarborough, of Kingsland, Ga., Stephanie Griggs, of Lawrenceville, Ga.; 11 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews.
A gathering of family and friends will be held Sunday, June 21, 2015, from 5 to 7 p.m. at R.W. Baker & Company Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. A graveside service will be held Monday June 22, 2015, at 11 a.m. at Holly Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Michael D. Halley officiating. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.
