Frances Brown Powell, 92, formerly of Suffolk, died Tuesday, June 16, 2015, in Arlington.

Mrs. Powell was born on Sept. 2, 1922, in Nansemond County to the late James Brown and Celestine Daughtrey Brown. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Powell, and two sisters, Lillian B. Whitfield and Lessie Brown. She retired from Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, now Sentara Obici Hospital, after more than 33 years of employment as a licensed practical nurse.

Surviving are two daughters, Lessie Willette Evans (Dan), of Washington, D.C., and Adrienne Ruffin (Alfonsa), of Fairfax Station; one foster daughter, Barbara Crute, of Suffolk; six grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and several cousins including Virginia Ashburn, Sharon Daughtrey, Michelle Faulk and AnToneah Daughtrey-Johnson, all of Suffolk, Rhonda Lambert, of Norfolk, and Helen George, of San Antonio, Texas.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 112 Mahan St., Suffolk. Harris Funeral Home has been entrusted with the home-going service. Burial will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Condolences for the family can be left at www.vharrisfuneralhome.com.
