Suffolk’s J.P. Leigh took John Cuomo of Richmond to the second hole of a playoff before he fell short in the 30th Virginia State Golf Association Super Senior Stroke Play Championship last week at Elizabeth Manor Golf and Country Club.
Cuomo and Leigh, both 67 years old, finished the weather-shortened tournament with 27-hole totals of 2-over-par 107. Each made par on the first extra hole (No. 1) after both scared the cup with birdie putts.
Cuomo rolled home the winning birdie on the par-4 second hole.
The tournament was scheduled for 36 holes, but heavy rain and lightning during Tuesday’s first round led to a suspension of play with every player in the field on the course.
A cool temperature and misty drizzle greeted players when they returned to their positions Wednesday at 9 a.m, but Cuomo said the course held up well.
Leigh, a member at Elizabeth Manor, recorded five birdies, four bogeys and a double bogey for a score of 71 through 18 holes. Later, he three-putted the eighth hole for a bogey down the stretch but birdied the par-3 ninth for 36 and his 107 aggregate.
