‘It was crazy’: Big comeback by Knights

Suffolk Christian Academy baseball coach Tommy Moose’s head was still spinning three days after his team’s performance Tuesday against Brunswick Academy.
“It was crazy, one of the craziest games I’ve ever been involved in,” Moose said.
Brunswick, ranked No. 7 in the state at the VISAA Division III level, was one of a string of VISAA opponents on the Knights schedule this year.
“We knew it was a strong team coming in,” Moose said, and they figured the Vikings were probably “a little out of our league.”
Brunswick has five starting seniors, while SCA has no seniors.
Early in the game, “we struggled to throw strikes,” Moose said, and on offense, the Knights struggled to make anything happen against the Vikings’ star pitcher, who is being recruited at the college level.
Brunswick took a 4-0 lead in the first inning and doubled that in the second with a help of a home run.
Down 8-0 after an inning and a half of play on their home field, Moose and his team were wondering what in the world was going on.
“I was thinking, ‘Why’d we schedule this game?’” he said.
He expected things to end swiftly by the run-rule, which dictates that a game conclude in or after the fifth inning if a team is up by at least 10 runs.
Suffolk Christian managed to score a run in the bottom of the second, and then the tide began to turn.
“Our guys fought back in the third, fourth inning,” Moose said, making the score 8-4 after the third and 8-5 after the fourth.
“We chased their starter out of the game,” Moose said. “Their bullpen struggled to throw strikes.”
But the fifth inning was what sank the Vikings’ ship. A mess of errors by Brunswick allowed SCA to score 13 runs in that inning.
For the game, the Vikings out-hit the Knights 8-5, but they also committed seven errors.
As Moose had expected, the game ended by the run-rule, but it was his team that had won the game, coming out ahead of its respected opponent, 18-8.
Moose said that in a huddle with the coaches after the game, “We’re just kind of shaking our heads, like, ‘I’m not really sure what just happened.’”
Junior Michael Cornette started in centerfield for SCA but ended up starring on the mound.
When the score reached 8-0, “I made the change to Michael, and Michael shut them out the rest of the game,” Moose said.
Junior Shawn Moose and sophomore Joel Blasiole led the Knights on offense.
“They accounted, between the two of them, for 11 of the 18 runs,” coach Moose said.
Shawn Moose finished with three runs batted in and three runs scored, and Blasiole had three RBIs and two runs scored.
The coach said his team is playing good defense.
“Pitching’s pretty strong right now,” he said. “Between Michael and Shawn, I’ve got two strong starters.”
He added, “We’re not hitting the ball great, but we’re doing enough to score the runs we need, and so I feel pretty good going into the conference tournament.”
Suffolk Christian (10-4, 6-0) hits the road to face Norfolk Collegiate School this afternoon.
