Virginia State Police are investigating a death that occurred on the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel early Tuesday morning.

The incident occurred on the northbound side near the small boat channel, Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police said.

It was first reported at 4:34 a.m. A caller said there was an abandoned vehicle on the right shoulder. Responders discovered a non-responsive female with the vehicle and pronounced her dead at the scene.

The State Police Bureau of Criminal Intelligence is investigating the unattended death, but the death does not appear to be suspicious in nature, Anaya stated in a press release.

The body has been transported to the medical examiner’s office for an autopsy. Police are continuing their investigation to identify the woman and determine how she died.

One northbound lane was shut down for part of the morning while troopers investigated.
