Suspected fuel spill investigated

UPDATED 10:31 p.m.: According to the city, a contractor is currently on site removing the contaminated material, which was found to be confined to the sewer system.
A portion of Williams Road remains closed and is expected to remain closed for the next several hours.
Earlier: The Fire Marshal’s Office was investigating a possible fuel spill in the Nansemond Gardens neighborhood off Wilroy Road on Thursday evening.
Residents called 911 about 5:13 p.m. because of an odor of gas in the area of the Public Utilities pump station. Public Utilities staff and a contractor, as well as Public Works crews, responded to the scene.
A portion of Williams Road was closed, and the spill was confined to the storm drains. None of the residents was evacuated immediately.
No further details were available by deadline Thursday.
