A correctional officer at the Western Tidewater Regional Jail has been arrested and charged with trying to smuggle suspected marijuana into the facility.
Michael Anthony Williams, 26, is charged with accommodation/distribution of marijuana to an inmate, which is a felony. He was released on a $5,000 secured bond.
According to Western Tidewater Regional Jail Superintendent William C. Smith, jail staff received information on Tuesday that a staff member may be attempting to smuggle contraband into the facility.
Once the information was verified and found to be reliable, the jail notified the Suffolk Police Department, Smith said. He said suspected marijuana was recovered during the investigation.
