The King’s Fork High School girls’ swimming team got its first win of the season over a Chesapeake opponent on Saturday, while the King’s Fork boys got their third, and senior Hugh Long broke a school record.
The Lady Bulldogs scored an 85-75 victory over Indian River High School, and the Bulldogs beat the Braves narrowly, 84-80, at the Great Bridge Swim and Racquet Club.
“It was really great for the girls,” King’s Fork swimming coach Erin Manning said. “They were all very excited, because they did not expect to win.”
As for the boys, she knew the meet was going to be close, but said, “I didn’t think it was going to be that close.”
The Bulldogs have now defeated Deep Creek, Oscar Smith and Indian River high schools — all from Chesapeake — this season.
Hugh Long produced the primary individual highlight for the King’s Fork boys when he broke the school record in the 200-meter freestyle, logging a time of two minutes and 30 seconds.
“He did a lot of extra work over the midterm break, so he’s been working hard at practice,” Manning said. “Now that he’s broken it once, I’m sure that he’ll continue to break it,” as a regular-season and postseason meets still remain.
Senior Mario Powell also shined for King’s Fork, contributing to wins in the boys’ 200-meter medley relay and 200-meter freestyle relay events.
Manning said the team of Powell, Long and juniors Alexander Kaye and Jimmy Smith “came from behind in the medley to win, so the meet started off very, very exciting.”
Powell also dropped time in the 100-meter breaststroke and the 50-meter freestyle.
For the Lady Bulldogs, junior Sonora Curliss won all of her events, including the girls’ 200-meter individual medley, the 100-meter backstroke, the 200-meter medley relay and the 200-meter freestyle relay.
“She dropped time in her 200 IM, that was great,” Manning said, alluding to a season-best 2:17 mark.
Junior Carlee Morse also won all her races, including the 50-meter freestyle, the 100-meter freestyle, the 200 medley relay and the 200 free relay.
King’s Fork does not currently have state qualifiers, “but the boys’ 200 free relay is very close,” as is Long in the 200 free.
King’s Fork’s boys (4-4) and girls (2-6) swimming teams close out their regular seasons Saturday evening when they face Hickory High School at the Great Bridge Swim and Racquet Club.
“I just want to see some fast times heading into the conference meet,” Manning said.
