Warriors go 1-2 at Virginia Duals

The Nansemond River High School wrestling team continued to show it has some fight worthy of a big stage.

The Warriors (13-11) went 1-2 against some of the best teams in the area during the invitation-only 2015 Virginia Duals held at Hampton Coliseum.

“Overall, I think we wrestled pretty good on Friday,” NR coach Tripp Seed said. “We were giving up two forfeits this weekend because of the flu,” as junior 170-pounder Larry Goodman and freshman 220-pounder Ben Sammons were out.

The Warriors faced Centreville High School on Friday and fell 39-28.

“I feel like it was a winnable match,” Seed said, but the forfeits and a failure to garner more bonus points via major decisions, technical falls or pins held Nansemond River back.

The match against the Wildcats “dictated how the rest of the weekend went,” Seed said.

The loss sent the Warriors to a consolation round on Saturday morning against Cape Henry Collegiate School, which Nansemond River won 41-33. The Dolphins forfeited four weight classes.

Junior 113-pounder Malcolm Dawson, senior 132-pounder Hunter Hill, senior 145-pounder Jacob Clark and senior 152-pounder Davon Adams each pinned their Cape Henry opponents to help pile up Warriors bonus points.

Seed said when competing in the Virginia Duals “where it’s a pretty prestigious tournament, you’ve got to get the bonus points when available all across the board.”

He noted usually if a team invited to participate in the Virginia Duals wins at least one match, they are invited back.

“We’ve won a match every year we’ve been,” Seed said, adding this is the Warriors’ seventh straight appearance in the event since he has been coach.

Nansemond River’s final consolation match on Saturday started at noon and ended with a 57-16 loss to Tallwood High School.

Though one of the Warriors’ best wrestlers, sophomore heavyweight Dia Gray, was pinned by Tallwood junior Hunter James, Seed was seeing it as a positive for Gray in the long run.

“I think he needed it,” the coach said, adding it will drive him to work harder and eliminate some weight now that he has returned from illness he experienced earlier in the season. “It’ll give him a little fire in him.”

Seed said his standouts this past weekend were Jacob Clark and Hunter Hill, who each went 3-0.

“They’re two seniors who are really putting in the time right now, they’re working hard in practice. They’re doing all the right things to make it to the state tournament,” Seed said. “And Jacob scored bonus points in all three of his matches for us.”

Clark pinned his opponents from Centreville and Cape Henry in the 145-pound weight class and won by a 12-4 major decision against his Tallwood opponent in the 138-pound weight class.

Hill beat his 138-pound Centreville opponent via a 9-6 decision and then wrestled in the 132-pound class on Saturday and recorded consecutive pins.

Seed cited some benefits his team experiences by participating in the Virginia Duals.

“I like it for the atmosphere,” he said. “Some of best teams in the country high school-wise are there.”

The Warriors competed in the Virginia Duals Black and Blue High School Tournament, which featured good teams from around the area.

The tournament featured 16 strong teams from Virginia, Delaware, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and South Carolina.

Seed said he is going to push to move up to the American division next year, which he said features teams with three to five wrestlers who placed in their state.

Some of the best college teams were also competing in college tourneys that were part of the Virginia Duals. The teams included Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, Old Dominion University and Edinboro University.

“I took my kids out of school a little bit early to watch those matches,” Seed said.
