The Nansemond River High School field hockey team had two representatives on the 2014 Group 4A All-State Second Team and were joined by a Lakeland High School player, as well.

Lady Warriors junior defender Ashley Hiltabrand and junior midfielder Claire Janek earned state-level honors for the first time.

“Actually, it’s the first time since I’ve been coaching that any of my players have” made the team, Nansemond River coach Ali Mowry said.

She praised Hiltabrand for an outstanding postseason.

“During that time, she also stabilized our backs when we had a few injuries at the time and concussions, and it was nice being able to move her anywhere on the field and (have) her still perform at a top level,” Mowry said.

Janek drew praise in particular for her steady and consistent performances all season long.

“You don’t get a break in that center midfield, and a lot of times you’re going against other opponents’ better players, and I just thought she played consistent all season long,” Mowry said.

From Lakeland, receiving her first-time state honor was junior defender Stasha Waterfield.

“I was excited for her, especially since we didn’t make it very far in regionals,” Lady Cavs coach Cortney Parker said. “I thought she was well-represented, and I think she deserved it.”

Though Waterfield scored some goals during the season, her coach said, “Her defensive play is really I think what stood out.”
