Two King’s Fork High School standouts are among a group of about 70 of the top seniors in the area across various levels of public and private schools that will be participating in the inaugural Adidas 757 All-Star Football game this Saturday at Powhatan Field in Norfolk.
Bulldog senior defensive backs Kane Miskel and TyQuan Weston have been selected to participate.
“They’re excited about being able to play another high school football game,” said KF coach Joe Jones.
Senior lineman George Reid was also invited to play but is unable to due to an injury.
Miskel and Weston will play for the East team, which is composed of players from Southside cities such as Suffolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and Norfolk.
Players on the team include Lake Taylor High School linebackers Shiheem Johnson and Marquise Poole, Ocean Lakes High School defensive back T.J. Griffin and Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School quarterback Blake LaRussa.
The West team includes players from locations like Hampton, Newport News and Williamsburg. Ironclad Conference Defensive Player of the Year Dimitri Holloway from Heritage High School will be on the team.
Jones has been recruited to coach the East offensive line by that team’s head coach, Darnell Moore. Jones noted the line includes players from teams like Group 6A state champion Ocean Lakes, Oscar Smith, Granby, Salem, Indian River and Hickory high schools.
“It’s a fun experience. It’s almost like kind of a reward for the season,” Jones said. “All my job is to kind of teach them the plays that we’re going to run.”
He commented on how the rules are different in an all-star game, with no blitzing allowed on defense and a requirement that a significant amount of the offensive attack be passing.
The premise of this inaugural all-star game, as stated at www.Adidas757game.com, is to “reward local student-athletes for their accomplishments and also provide a platform for them to facilitate their educational endeavors and simultaneously enhance their opportunities to continue their pursuit of athletic careers.”
Jones noted that the summer time frame of the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game has been problematic to getting some players involved.
“They miss out on a lot of players because they’re already enrolled in their college,” he said. “I have a good feeling after this year’s all-star game in the summer that next year they may try to move theirs.”
The gates to Powhatan Field will open on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. with kickoff scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at select high schools, www.Adidas757game.com or any of Downtown Locker Room’s eight locations.
Advance tickets for adults (12 and over) are $10, and for children 11 and under they are $7. At the gate, tickets for adults will be $12.
