The Lakeland High School girls’ basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season after defeating visiting Indian River High School 42-31 on Friday evening.
Lady Cavaliers coach Brandey Blunt said her team is not relying on one person to do it all this season.
The two top scorers for Lakeland on Friday were junior D’Jannay Patterson, with 15 points, and senior Sharneisha Savage, with 11 points.
Of Savage, who was one of the team’s top scorers for the first time this season, Blunt said, “She stepped up big tonight.”
The coach was once again impressed by her team’s heart.
“They just don’t quit,” she said.
Lakeland sophomore Alasia Lee also chipped in six points.
Blunt indicated the Lady Cavs still have room for improvement, though. She said they were up by about 14 points at the half, but then let the Lady Braves back into the game in the third quarter.
“The closest they got was nine, I believe,” the coach said. “We definitely need to improve on a lot of things. We’ve been fortunate because the other teams aren’t finishing on their end, because if they were, it would have been a lot different outcome.”
She hopes her players will improve their on-court decision-making skills as the season progresses.
Lakeland (3-0) hosts Oscar Smith High School on Tuesday.
