Networking group forms

A new women-only networking group is coming to town and having its first meeting next week.
Empowering Women in Business, founded in Virginia Beach by Robin Richards, will have its first Suffolk chapter meeting on Tuesday. Amy Tucker, founder of the Suffolk chapter, said she was attending the Virginia Beach meetings but wanted something where she lives.
“I said, ‘I would really like to bring something to Suffolk,’” said Tucker, a mortgage lender. “I’m trying to reach out to our local businesswomen here.”
The meetings will feature breakfast, speakers and a time for each woman in attendance to give the “elevator speech” on her business, Tucker said.
“It’s just a way to get together and network,” she said. “Sometimes, when women are in business, we’re a little bit shy, even when it comes to networking. We’re just trying to do a real easy environment where we try to connect people with other people who can help them in their business.”
Tucker said she and Richards go out of their way to make connections between businesswomen.
“When we know that businesses can work together or they might need each other or support each other, we go out of our way to make connections with those women,” she said.
Tucker said the meetings initially will be held every other week. Meeting locations will change but will always include breakfast.
“We try to do it early in the morning so people can leave and still have a full work day,” Tucker said. “We do have a breakfast buffet of some sort to try to support the business where we’re at.”
The location for Tuesday’s meeting will be Stillwaterhouse Tea Room, 201 Prentis St. It will take place from 7:45 to 9:30 a.m., and women are asked to bring $10 for the food, venue and gratuity.
“My goal is to connect businesswomen in Suffolk and use venues that benefit local, women-owned businesses,” Tucker said.
Tucker is predicting a robust turnout for the first meeting, based on online RSVPs.
“We will be growing,” she added.
