Two Suffolk police officers teamed up to save the life of a man suffering a cardiac arrest recently.
Officers Shane Sukowaski and Daniel Nesbitt Jr. were in the Lakeside area when they got the call of a cardiac arrest on Linden Avenue. They headed to the address and arrived quickly.
Nesbitt went inside the house while Sukowaski retrieved a CPR mask and automated external defibrillator from the car, Sukowaski said recently.
Inside the house, they found the man with no pulse and not breathing. The officers cut off his shirt, and Nesbitt administered chest compressions, while Sukowaski attached the defibrillator.
Once the defibrillator was ready, the officers used it to shock the man. They also did one rescue breath, but by the time Sukowaski was ready to do another one, the man had started moaning.
“We attempted to keep him conscious,” Nesbitt said. “He was nodding in and out.”
Medics arrived and began to transport the man to the hospital. As he was being loaded into the ambulance, the man was talking to the medics, the officers reported. They later learned he survived the episode and was recovering in the hospital.
Both officers shrugged off the accomplishment, giving credit to each other and deflecting praise.
“It’s just what we do,” Sukowaski said. “It’s what we’re here for.”
Sukowaski did mention the pair received “a lot of emails about it” from members of the department congratulating them.
Saving lives is old hat for Sukowaski, who has been a member of the department for nearly five years.
Among his prior lifesaving ventures, Sukowaski helped rescue several elderly residents from a fire at the Chorey Park Apartments in June 2013. For that, he earned a Lifesaving Award at the Hampton Roads Chamber of Commerce’s 2014 Valor Awards.
Nesbitt is new to the police force, having graduated the academy in April. Sukowaski is his field training officer.
