Lady Warriors easily advance

A day made no difference for Phoebus High School’s softball team, but host Nansemond River High School showed some improvement from Wednesday to Thursday during the weather-interrupted conference tournament semifinal.
The No. 1 Lady Warriors led 6-0 in the bottom of the second inning on Wednesday when officials postponed the game until Thursday evening.
On the second night, Nansemond River head coach Gabe Rogers was surprised by how quickly his team wrapped up the game. The Lady Warriors scored four runs in each of the third and fourth innings for a 14-0 mercy rule-shortened win.
“I thought they were a little more ready to play softball tonight than last night,” Rogers said on Thursday.
The victory qualified the Lady Warriors for regional play for the first time in recent history and advanced them to today’s Ironclad Conference tournament championship game against No. 3 King’s Fork High School.
Fueling Nansemond River’s win against the No. 4 Lady Phantoms was junior Morgan Lowers, who went 3-for-4, with three runs batted in and two runs scored. Sophomore Lauren Maddrey went 3-for-3, with three runs scored, and she improved to 16-1 as a pitcher, throwing five strikeouts in four innings.
Sophomore Maddie McGrath went 2-for-3.
The Lady Warriors (19-1) have faced King’s Fork (14-8) twice already this year. They defeated the school 10-2 in the first game, when its star pitcher, junior Sydney Wash, was sidelined due to a back injury.
Nansemond River more recently beat Wash and Co. 8-2, but Rogers acknowledged the difficulty of beating a team three times.
“Obviously they’re going to be very psyched up to play us, and we’re going to be really psyched up to play them,” he said. “It’s for all the marbles now.”
The title game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. start tonight at Nansemond River High School.
