Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:
- Shawn Moose, sophomore for Suffolk Christian Academy baseball: He posted incredible stats, helping his team go 3-0 last week. He went 9-for-11 at the plate, including five doubles, a triple, a home run, 11 runs batted in and nine runs scored. He pitched six and two-thirds innings with 13 strikeouts, including earning the win in Friday’s game against visiting Summit Christian Academy. That gave his team a share of the regular-season title and improved his pitching record to 3-0.
- Ty Williams, sophomore for Nansemond River High School soccer: He scored two game-winning goals this week. The first came with four minutes to go in Tuesday’s 3-2 home win over Denbigh High School. The second was with under 10 minutes remaining in Friday’s 2-1 home win over Tabb High School. Despite Wednesday’s 3-2 home loss to the elite Hickory High School, his defense helped keep his team in the game.
- Emily “EJ” Bankson, eighth-grader for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy softball: She showed strength throughout the conference tournament. She went 2-for-3 and pitched a no-hitter in Tuesday’s 13-0 win over visiting Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School. She won on the mound in Thursday’s 4-3 victory over visiting Cape Henry Collegiate School. Despite Friday’s 3-1 championship loss to Greenbrier Christian Academy, she allowed only three hits and went 2-for-3 at the plate.
