Storms on tap for today

The potential for severe weather will loom today, along with the memory of deadly tornadoes in the Deep South earlier this week, as well as three twisters Friday in northeastern North Carolina.
“We’re going to have another active weather day, it looks like,” said meteorologist James Foster of the National Weather Service in Wakefield. “It looks like there’s a good chance for showers and thunderstorms, and also a better chance of thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.”
Foster said the afternoon and evening will bring the possibility of severe thunderstorms, but he stopped short of making any tornado predictions.
“I can’t say that that won’t happen or that we won’t have a chance of that,” he said. “There’s a chance, but not a certainty.”
One hazard he felt better prognosticating about was flooding.
“That would be one of the other issues that could happen with the severe weather tomorrow,” he said. Motorists are reminded not to drive into water that covers the road, as even just a few inches of moving water could sweep a vehicle away.
Temperatures in the mid to upper 70s are on deck for today, and lows tonight will be in the mid to upper 60s.
“The storms will probably extend into tomorrow night,” he said Tuesday, “and finally by early Thursday morning, we should start to see some improvement in the weather. It looks like it’s trending towards a nice-looking weekend.”
