Tornado watch canceled early

City workers are responding to a few areas of high water in the southern part of the city. The following areas are impassable due to high water:
- 6200 block of Leafwood Road
- 4900 block of Holy Neck Road
- Eastbound lane of Copeland Road at intersection with Whaleyville Boulevard
- 8600 block of New Road

The tornado watch has been canceled early by the National Weather Service.
City spokesman Tim Kelley said there were no reports of damage from the storm.
Dominion Virginia Power reports 19 customers in the southern portion of the city without power at 8:25 p.m.

The tornado warning for the southern portion of the city has been canceled, as has the severe thunderstorm warning. A tornado watch remains in effect until 9 p.m.

The southern portion of the city is under a tornado warning issued by the National Weather Service.
National Weather Service Doppler radar indicted a tornado at 5:49 p.m. six miles west of Como, N.C. The storm was moving northeast at 20 miles per hour.
Take cover now. Move to an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows. If in a mobile home, a vehicle or outdoors, move to the closest substantial shelter.

A severe thunderstorm warning is in effect for the southern portion of the city of Suffolk until 6:15 p.m.
The storm is capable of producing quarter-size hail and winds in excess of 60 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service. Lightning and very heavy rain are also risks.
The weather service recommends moving to an interior room on the lowest floor of your home or business.
Earlier: The city of Suffolk, along with the rest of Hampton Roads, is under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. Friday.
The National Weather Service issued the watch at 1:20 p.m. A tornado watch means conditions are favorable for the formation of tornadoes. If a tornado forms, a tornado warning will be issued.
Showers and thunderstorms are expected in the coming hours, mainly between 5 and 11 p.m. A slight chance of showers is expected between 11 p.m. and 2 a.m.
