Shake it for a good cause

The Suffolk chapter of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority wants folks to shake it for a good cause during a Zumbathon fundraiser on Saturday for the March of Dimes.

Five Zumba instructors from Onelife Fitness at Chesapeake Square will lead the workout at the Booker T. Washington Recreation Center, 204 Walnut St., from noon to 3 p.m., sorority sister Tonica White said.

“Zumba is for people of all ages and all sizes,” she said. “You are not auditioning, you are just coming out there and moving.

“They play a lot of upbeat music … (and) the instructors keep the crowd going.”

Tickets for the event are selling for $10 per person, and they must be purchased beforehand. For ticket inquiries, call White at 254-5059, or email her at zetafinest1980@gmail.com.

Nationally, White said, the sorority had been supporting March of Dimes, which raises money for and awareness of premature births, for about 30 years.

The cause was a good fit with the sorority’s Z-HOPE community outreach program, she said.

Each sorority sister had her own individual fundraising goal, according to White, which they pursued alongside the team effort.

“I have been a Zeta now for over 11 years, and (for) over half of those I have marched and raised money for March of Dimes,” she said.

White urged folks to increase their fitness and help premature babies and their families by signing up for the Zumbathon.

“Come out and support a great cause, and have fun while doing it,” she said.

In Suffolk, the March of Dimes’ March for Babies will be held at Constant’s Wharf on April 26 at 10 a.m., with registrations from 9 a.m.
