Mervyn Michael Mercer, 83, passed away Monday, March 10, 2014, after a long illness. Mervyn Mercer was born in Curacao, Dutch Colony, and was the son of the late Herman and Isabell Defren Mercer. He was preceded in death by a brother, Roy Mercer, and a sister, Marjorie Phillips.
Mervyn graduated from Tranquility Government Secondary School and was an avid soccer and cricket player. He also attended St. Mary’s College in Trinidad. He attended Crossway Christian Church in Bronx, N.Y., and Heaven on Earth Ministries in Suffolk. He retired from Trinidad Police Department and worked as a psych social health technician at North Central Hospital in New York.
Survivors to cherish his memory include his devoted wife of 37 years, Evangeline Miller Mercer; one son, Selby Mercer (Andrea), of Montreal, Canada; two daughters, Cherryl Mohan, of Toronto, Canada, and Dawn Mercer, of Montreal, Canada; brother, Arnim (Ruby) Mercer, of Palm Bay, Fla.; sisters, Umilta Mercer Carlisle, of Manitoba, Canada, and Beryl (Stanley) Stuart, of Trinidad; brother-in-law, Willie Miller, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; sister-in-law, Sadie Murray, of Zuni; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; two goddaughters; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Heaven on Earth Ministries, Suffolk, officiated by Apostle Betty Knight. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Mausoleum and Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
