Lady Warriors take second seed

The Nansemond River High School girls’ basketball team communicated its No. 2 placement in the Ironclad Conference with Saturday’s 66-40 home win over Heritage High School, preceded by Friday’s 70-35 home win over Denbigh High School.
Junior guard Laura Ortiz led the Lady Warriors against Heritage with 21 points, freshman point guard Cassidy Simmons supplied 17 points and sophomore forward Aneka Yelverton added 14.
Against the Lady Patriots on Friday, Yelverton’s 20 points led the way for NR while freshman power forward Najla Bibb had 13 points and Ortiz had 10.
Nansemond River (10-11) owns the second seed in this week’s conference tournament and awaits the winner of Tuesday’s quarterfinal game between No. 3 Heritage and No. 6 Denbigh. A third meeting this season with one of those teams will occur on Thursday, with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off at King’s Fork High School.
