Junius H. Hardie

Junius Henry Hardie passed away Feb. 11, 2014, at Nansemond Pointe at age 92. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather and uncle.

He was born Dec. 19, 1921, in Sunbury, N.C. He spent more than 30 years working at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. At the time he retired, he was working in management. He was married to Lorraine R. Hardie, who preceded him in death in 2001.

He was an active member at First Baptist Church in Suffolk. He was a talented musician and sang in the church choir. Hardie headed up the maintenance and improvement fund at the church for years. He was also a licensed detective.

He is survived by two sons, Leroy Thornton Edwards Jr. (Margo), of Michigan, and Dennis R. Edwards, of Suffolk; four grandchildren, Tara Edwards, of Michigan, Kelli Roberts (Lawrence), of Texas, Lee Edwards, of Michigan, and Justin Edwards, of Maryland; two great-grandchildren; and siblings John Hardie, of Portsmouth, William Hardie, of Portsmouth, and Mary Boone, Charlie Hardie and Lawrence Hardie, all of Sunbury, N.C., and a host of nieces and nephews.

A viewing will be held Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014, at Peebles Funeral Home from 2 to 6 p.m. The body will be placed in First Baptist Church at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014. The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 17 at First Baptist Church.
