SUFFOLK — Mr. Nelson Dean Stone, 69, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2014, at his residence surrounded by his loving family, after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Mr. Stone is predeceased by his parents, Dean and Lona Stone.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Barbara Stone; son, Jonathan Stone and wife, Jenifer, of Virginia Beach; daughter, Jeanette Stone, of Suffolk; two sisters, Beatrice Stone and Patricia Stone, of Richmond, Ky.; three grandchildren, Aurelia and Lila Stone and Adriana Kayli Edwards; and his beloved German shepherd “Willie.”

Nelson loved playing horseshoes and was an active member of the Portsmouth and Sleepy Hole horseshoe clubs. He was also an active member with the Magnolia Ruritan and The Norman F. Matthews Post 57 of The American Legion in Suffolk.

Mr. Stone proudly served as member of the U.S. Navy for more than 20 years and continued serving his country as an electrical engineer with Newport News Shipbuilding for an additional 25 years. Nelson will always be remembered for his easy wit and gentle manner.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2014, at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA 23434 with full military honors and Dr. Robert H. Carpenter officiating. Burial will be private.
