The King’s Fork High School Lady Bulldogs never trailed on Friday night, but host Indian River High School tied the game up in the waning moments.

Then, senior point guard Brittany Alston scored the final points for King’s Fork, leading to a 38-34 victory.

“I don’t think (Indian River) scored 10 points in any of the quarters, so I’ll give the credit tonight to our defense,” Lady Bulldogs head coach Maurice Fofana said. “We played well.”

Entering the game, the Lady Braves had four players averaging double figures, including senior Breona Cowan (14.8 points per game), senior Chelsea Harrison (13.5), junior Tori Jackson (12.0) and senior Tee Moore-Carver (10.5).

“I think we were real prepared as far as our defensive assignments,” Fofana said, as Cowan was held to six points. Harrison was her team’s lone player in double figures with 11, Jackson had eight and Moore-Carver had seven.

Fofana specifically praised sophomore Jac’quazja Council for being “great on the defensive end tonight.” Senior Khadedra Croker was strong defensively as well, earning a triple-double with 15 points, 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots.

The Lady Bulldogs were 18-for-32 from the free throw, 56.3 percent, and missed more than 20 shots from the paint. Additionally, foul trouble made the end of the game more dramatic for King’s Fork, with Croker and freshman Cydney Nichols fouling out.

But then Alston stepped up. She drove down the court with about 30 seconds remaining and made a shot to make the score 36-34. After the Lady Bulldogs got a defensive stop, she was fouled and hit both free throws to seal the win.

“She played big for us tonight,” Fofana said, as Alston produced her first double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 assists.

Evaluating his team’s offense, Coach Fofana said, “I think we have some improving to do,” but with a 5-0 start, he said, “I’m happy where we’re at.”

The Lady Bulldogs travel to Myrtle Beach, S.C. to play in the Crescom Bank Holiday Invitational on Tuesday against Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School of Orangeburg, S.C.
