More puppy love

As has been the trend during the past decade or so, electronics are likely to be the big gift items this Christmas. From iPods to Xbox One — and including lots of Androids and Kindles and Beats — families will be finding lots of things that need batteries and charging before they can be used, things that also will be obsolete in just a couple of years.

But one of the best kinds of gifts available in Suffolk this year doesn’t need batteries and will never be obsolete. It’s furry, cuddly and full of love, and it is all but guaranteed to make both the giver and receiver feel better than any new cellphone or GPS.

The Suffolk Humane Society and the Suffolk Animal Care Center are working together to get out the word that there are dozens of cats and dogs looking for homes this Christmas season. Any one of them would make a great gift for yourself.

Adopting an animal in Suffolk is easy. Visit the animal control facility on Forest Glen Drive or any of the adopt-a-thons planned by Suffolk Humane (there are two this month), get to know the animals that are available and find the one that grabs your heart. From there, it’s a simple matter of paying the adoption fee, which helps cover the cost to the city of holding the animals, having them spayed or neutered and getting them their vaccinations.

This month, adoption is even easier on the wallet than ever, as City Councilman Mike Duman, who is a board member for Suffolk Humane, is offering to reimburse $25 of the adoption cost of up to 100 animals adopted through Dec. 31. That contribution brings the cost down to $50 for cats and $70 for dogs.

The first of the Humane Society’s adoption events will be held today at Suffolk Animal Care Center, 124 Forest Glen Drive, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The second event, on Dec. 14, also from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., will take place at the PetSmart locations at Chesapeake Square and North Suffolk.

After paying the full cost for an adoption, folks can bring adoption papers and a receipt to Duman’s Suffolk car dealership at 2300 Godwin Blvd. to receive a $25 check. For more information on the adoption discount, call Mike Duman Auto Sales at 539-1000 or visit www.mikeduman.com. Hot new electronic gadgets will never bring the level of satisfaction you’ll get from giving a “forever home” to a loving pet. Perhaps it’s time for more puppy love and less Angry Birds.
