James Newby

James “Chuck” Newby, 74, was born on Aug. 15, 1939, in Isle of Wight County to the late Joseph and Alma Newby. On Tuesday, Nov. 19, he peacefully passed away surrounded by his loved ones.
Chuck attended Paul Lawrence Dunbar School and Hunting High School. He was employed for many years as a concrete finisher.
He was preceded in death by two sons, James Newby and Michael Newby; a daughter, Brenda Holland; a brother, Joseph W. Newby; a sister, Vennie Roberts; two nephews, Alexander Talton Jr. and Carlton Holland Jr.; and a niece Shirrell Luster.
Left behind to celebrate his memory are his two daughters, Alma Newby and Wanda Newby Jones; a devoted daughter by Christ, Cheryl Holland; two sons by Christ, Carlton Holland and Corris Holland; two sisters, Jean Mitchell and Alma Gullory; a devoted granddaughter, Lavondra Holland; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Mr. Newby will be on view today, from noon to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral service will take place on Sunday at 1 p.m. at T.E. Cooke-Overton Funeral Home Inc. Chapel, and he will be laid to rest at Carver Memorial Cemetery.
