Rosser Ray Turner

Rosser Ray Turner died on Nov. 16, 2013, at Sentara Obici Hospital. Rosser was born March 5, 1939, in Nansemond County, to the late Raymond and Mary Turner Smith. He was the oldest of five sons born to this union.

Rosser was predeceased by his first wife, Jean P. Turner; a son, Rosser R. Turner Jr.; one sister, Lois Jean Jones; a very special cousin, Evelyn Whitaker. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 44 years, Sylvia Jolly Turner; one daughter, Adrienne Michelle Turner; one granddaughter, Amayah Mone’ Turner; four brothers, James Smith (Betty), Earnest Smith (Gail), Nathaniel Smith (Elizabeth), of Suffolk, and Raymond Smith (Delores), of Virginia Beach; one aunt, Alice Pressley, of Baltimore, Md.; one uncle, Will Smith, of Suffolk; four very special cousins, Thelma Lavern Glover, Mary Young, Denise Bynum and Gregory Rodgers; seven nieces; four nephews; great-nieces and -nephews; one aunt-in-law, Julia C. Bradley; and a host of other relatives and friends.

As a member of Metropolitan Baptist Church, he was involved in many ministries and in his community outreach ministries. He retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 20 years of service; he served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged.

A funeral service will be held at noon, Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013, at Metropolitan Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Dr. Robert L. Hobbs. Interment will be held at noon, Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
