FRANKLIN — Jane Ellen Humphrey Beale, 84, passed away at her home with her loving family by her side on Sept. 9, 2013.

Born in Richmond and raised in Huntington, W.Va., she was a daughter of the late Dr. Edwin Jacob Humphrey Jr. and Jennie King Humphrey. From 1948 to 1974, Jane lived in Suffolk, where she was an active member and Sunday school teacher at West End Baptist Church. She was past president of Suffolk PTAs, past president of Louise Obici Hospital Auxiliary, a member of the Junior Volunteer Service Corps and a Scout leader. In 1974, she moved to Franklin, where she was twice president of the Franklin Garden Club and held numerous positions with the Garden Club of Virginia, including past chairman of the Board of Governors and Annual Meetings, parliamentarian and editor of the Register and state chairman of Public Relations. Jane won numerous awards in garden shows, served as a judge and was often sought after as a guest lecturer throughout the state.

Survivors include her husband, Leland E. Beale Jr.; daughter, Catherine “Kay” P. Lawson (George), of Richmond; sons, James “Jim” R. Pond Jr. (Kathy), of Chesapeake, and Leland “Lea” E. Beale III (Jamie), of Poquoson; granddaughters, Jennie Katherine Pond, of Chesapeake, and Jordan Alyssa Conway, of Poquoson; grandsons, George “Tripp” H. Lawson III (Christine), of Richmond, Edwin K. Lawson, of Arlington, Leland E. Beale IV, Charles Lear Beale and Hunter Andrew Beale, all of Poquoson; great-grandson, Tate Edward Lawson, of Richmond; sister, Kay H. Pancake, of Huntington, W.Va.; brother, Dr. Edwin J. Humphrey III, of Largo, Fla., and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Wright Funeral Home, 206 W. Fourth Ave., Franklin, with the Rev. James H. Hyatt Jr. officiating.  Interment will be private in Huntington, W.Va. Memorials may be made in Jane’s name to West End Baptist Church, 501 W.
