Selma Mae Powell

Selma Mae Powell, at the age of 63, was called home by her Lord and Savior on Monday, July 22, 2013, at her place of residence. Selma Powell was a native of Nansemond County and the daughter of Lee Baker and Emma Riddick Baker. Mrs. Powell graced us with her loving new spirit on Sept. 30, 1949.

Selma Powell was a true believer, as she established herself to be a faithful and respected member of New Baptist Church of Suffolk for more than 32 years. In 2008, Selma Powell retired from Walmart located in downtown Suffolk, where she was famous for her “Microwave Popcorn” lunches. She also became known as “Big Momma” due to her opinionated but loving and caring nature.

She is survived by her loving husband, with whom she on April 10, 1971, began a wonderful journey called marriage. She is also survived by her two sons, Andre L. Powell (Sandra), of North Carolina, and Donzell D. Powell (Keona), of Portsmouth; one sister, Sarah Brown, of Suffolk; one nephew, Kelvin Brown (Ana); five grandchildren; other relatives and friends.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 27, 2013, at New First Baptist Church officiated by the Rev. Steven Cheeks. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery.
