Larry N. Owen Sr.

Larry N. Owen Sr., 73, of Suffolk, went to be with the Lord on June 19, 2013.
A native of Junction City, Ark., he was predeceased by his father, Andrew D. Owen, his mother, Syble Green, and his brother, Lonnie Owen. Larry faithfully served more than 20 years in the United States Air Force, serving a tour in the Vietnam War, among other duties around the world. Upon his retirement from military service, he worked for Beckley Coal Mine Co. in Beckley, W.Va., and he also worked for and was retired from the Flowers Bakery Company in Norfolk. Larry never fully retired, though, as he spent his last years spending time with his family and restoring his family’s house in the mountains of West Virginia — his favorite place on Earth.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Virginia R. Owen, son Larry Owen (Angela) and daughter Jennifer Jahnsen (William), all of Suffolk. “Grandpa” will forever be missed by his devoted, loving grandchildren: Andrew R. Owen, Josh Jahnsen, Katie Owen, Eryn Owen and Emily Owen, all of Suffolk. They were the pride and joy of his life. Additionally, he is survived by three sisters: Carolyn White (Chester), of El Dorado, Ark., Bobbie (Bruce) Dalton, of Conway, Ark., and Rosie Castle, of San Antonio, Texas. A whole host of nieces, nephews, cousins, “special” grandchildren and friends will also cherish memories of him.
In lieu of traditional services, Larry’s family will be celebrating his life at their mountain home in West Virginia later this summer. The family will receive friends on Friday, June 21, 2013, at his son Larry’s residence, 6313 Whaleyville Blvd., Suffolk, from 5 to 8 p.m.
