Book signing to benefit shelter

Local author Kelly Anne Blount will be signing copies of her first, up-and-coming young adult fantasy novel “Grishma” and selling them for a good cause on Friday.

Ten percent of the proceeds of book sales during the wine tasting at C3 Vino will go to the Genieve Shelter, a local organization that helps domestic violence victims.

“It’s just something that’s been close to my heart,” said Blount, who teaches preschool at Florence Bowser Elementary School. “It’s something really important, and I know a lot of people are in need.”

“Grishma,” which Blount compared to the Twilight and Hunger Games series, is set in the world of Necoh, where everyone fears the murderous beast named Grishma. Ryder, a young boy, sets out to kill Grishma after the monster kills his father and kidnaps his mother and younger sister. However, he accidentally transports Brooklyn, a high school junior, into his world, where she is mistaken for the missing Princess Sophie.

A native of Wisconsin, Blount, 30, taught elementary school in the Cayman Islands before marrying and returning to the States.

She currently is working on the second book of the Necoh series, which likely will extend to at least three books, she said. She hopes to have the sequel out by late summer.

Signed copies of “Grishma” will be available for a special price of $10 during the book signing and wine tasting, which will take place from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at C3 Vino, 115 W. Washington St.

“I know C3 Vino really does a lot for the community,” she said. “I’m grateful they agreed to partner up to have this wine tasting as well as book signing event.”

Guests also can bring material donations for the Genieve Shelter to the book signing, such as office supplies, cleaning supplies, paper products, trash bags, first aid kits and Walmart gas cards.

For those who cannot attend the signing, information about how to purchase the book is available at www.kellyanneblount.com.
