Isle of Wight Academy recovered from an opening salvo by Tidewater Academy but ultimately fell to the Warriors 11-7 in a VISAA Division III semifinal game Thursday at Shepherd Stadium.
The two teams hooked up in a season-opening game, won by IWA 8-4. On Thursday, Tidewater put up five runs in their first at-bat after IWA starter Travis Jones had retired the first two batters he faced. A pair of singles, two doubles and a home run by Tanner Mitchell made the score 5-0 before IWA ever got to bat.
The Warriors added two more runs in the second, but the IWA offense awakened in the bottom of the inning. Carson Robertson doubled to lead off, and Reid Taylor grounded out, sending Robertson to third and later to home plate. Matt Herrmann reached on an error by the shortstop, sending Taylor to third, and advanced to second without a throw. Logan Wright singled, scoring Taylor and Herrmann.
Hunter Triplett doubled and scored Wright. Rainer Marfio singled, and Triplett scored on an error by the Tidewater outfield to make it 7-5.
Marfio led IWA hitters with his 3-for-4 outing. Robertson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Wright was 2-for-4, driving in two.
Jones (5-3) took the loss, allowing 13 hits and 11 runs over 4-1/3 innings. The winner, Tidewater’s Daniel McKenney, was far from dominant, allowing nine hits and six runs — none of which were earned — in 5-1/3 innings.
IWA finishes the year at 16-9. Tidewater will play in Saturday’s Division III championship game.
