A kitchen fire in the Cedar Lake Shores neighborhood displaced a family of six and their pet bird Friday evening.

The fire in the 2000 block of Sprucewood Lane was reported about 10 p.m., and units arrived nine minutes later. Arriving units found light smoke coming from the single-story brick rancher. Fire damage was confined to the kitchen, with smoke damage to the rest of the home, city spokeswoman Diana Klink said in a press release.

One of the adult occupants was treated at the scene for minor burns to the hands, feet and face. Three adults and three children were displaced and are being assisted by family members. Firefighters also were able to rescue the family’s pet bird from its cage.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
