Carolyn Lawrence and Mary Jenkins enjoyed last year’s Paint the Town Red event. It will be held again Saturday.

If you’ve ever wanted to see local politicians and television journalists do silly things, you could just turn on the TV.

Or, you could help support the American Red Cross’s efforts in Hampton Roads by attending the organization’s Paint the Town Red event, set for this Saturday, March 2.

Tickets are still available for the event, which will include local “celebrity waiters” completing funny challenges throughout the night. As if that weren’t enough, the event will feature an ‘80s theme.

“Without a doubt, the reason people should come is because it’s an ‘80s theme this year,” said Patrick Belcher, executive director for the Peninsula Cluster of the American Red Cross. “It’s a fun event, and it’s a great chance for everybody to be involved and really see how the Red Cross is involved in the community.”

Formerly an event mostly for Suffolk, it has turned into one of the Red Cross’s only fundraising events in the entire region. It funds programs such as disaster relief, which helps families affected by house fires, floods and other disasters.

“We’ve responded to nearly 20 incidents here in the Western Tidewater area since the start of the calendar year,” Belcher said. “For whatever reason, we’ve had a lot more incidents than we have in the past in the same time period. There’s a real need for this type of support.”

The average family of four costs about $1,000 for food, clothing and three nights’ shelter, he added.

The Red Cross has set a goal of $60,000 to raise from the event, which lasts from 6 to 11 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, 100 E. Constance Road. The ‘80s theme has spared no aspect of the event, from the centerpieces to the silent auction items. Guests also are encouraged to dress ’80s-style, Belcher said.

Celebrity waiters include US 106’s Dave Parker, Mayor Linda T. Johnson and her husband Jesse Johnson, Councilman Roger Fawcett and a variety of other media representatives and businesspeople. Craig Moeller and Vanessa Coria of WVEC will host. Councilman Mike Duman, also the owner of Mike Duman Auto Sales, will serve as the auctioneer.

Tickets are $55 each. To purchase them, or for more information about the event, visit www.suffolkredcross.org.
