Suffolk firefighters had a big job to accomplish when they responded early Monday morning to a smoke-filled recycling facility at the regional landfill.
The call came in shortly before 2:30 a.m., according to city spokeswoman Diana Klink. Firefighters discovered a large amount of plastic and aluminum material on fire inside the Bi-Metals Recycling LLC building.
Heavy equipment had to be brought in to push the burning material outside the building so it could be extinguished, Klink wrote. Firefighters contained the fire within an hour and prevented it from burning the structure.
There were no injuries during the conflagration. Battalion 1, Engine 1, Engine 2, Engine 3, Rescue 1, Ladder 3, Medic 3 and Rehab 6 all responded. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
