A man faces several serious traffic charges and the criminal charge of attempting to elude police following a short police pursuit early Monday morning.
After being arrested, James Timothy O’Brien was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, reckless driving, having an open container of alcohol while driving and eluding police.
According to Suffolk spokeswoman Diana Klink, a police officer in the 500 block of North Main Street saw a black Jeep traveling south at a high rate of speed at about 12:30 a.m. Monday and then saw the Jeep cross into the opposing lane of traffic at the intersection of North Main and Prentis Streets.
The officer turned on his emergency equipment and followed the Jeep, “which continued traveling recklessly and was not stopping,” Klink stated in an email. The vehicle “eventually pulled into a driveway in (the) 400 block of Elizabeth Street,” where O’Brien was apprehended.
