Audrey H. Jernigan

Audrey H. Jernigan, 74, of the 1000 block of Delaware Avenue, passed away on Dec. 18, after a long, courageous battle with Alzheimer’s. A native of Suffolk, she was the daughter of the late Roosevelt and Mildred Carr Harrell. After many years of dedicated service, Audrey had retired as a bookkeeper from the Suffolk Public Schools, where she had been awarded a lifetime membership to the National PTA in recognition of her service to the students and staff of John Yeates Middle School. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Raymond T. Jernigan Sr.; her son, R. Thomas Jernigan Jr.; his fiancé, Raz Baust; and her two granddaughters, Elise and Ava Jernigan. She is also survived by her sisters, Barbara H. (Marvin) Fanny, of Suffolk, Jean H. Harms, of Alexandria, Va., and JoAnn H. (Thomas) Jones, of Murfreesboro, N.C.; a special sister-in-law, Lillie Jernigan; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, who all will miss her love, warmth and generosity.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m. at Holly Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Michael D. Halley officiating. Friends may join the family for visitation at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St., Suffolk, from 7 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 20. Condolences may be registered online at rwbakerfh.com.
