Thanksgiving food giveaways planned

A local group seeks volunteers for its annual Thanksgiving food giveaway planned for Nov. 17.
Impact Suffolk, a cooperative of churches from throughout the city, annually provides a Thanksgiving meal for up to 1,200 people, according to Ben Plewes, who is on the board of Impact Suffolk.
“Originally, the idea for Impact Suffolk was to try to get the different churches to work together, regardless of their faith or their racial makeup,” Plewes said. “This is just one of the things that we have done. The feeding of the needy is another Christian outreach.”
About 25 churches are participating to bring volunteers and side dishes such as canned vegetables, he said. The group purchases meat itself with money it raises throughout the year.
“When people get through the line, they have a complete meal,” Plewes said.
Volunteers are needed to help people get through the line and carry food to their car, Plewes said.
The event also will include live music and other entertainment for folks.
“It’s a really good time for everybody. It’s a good feeling,” Plewes said. “We just feel like it’s part of our Christian duty to be helping other people.”
The giveaway will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. at the tennis courts behind Farm Fresh, 1401 N. Main St. For more information, visit www.impactsuffolk.org.
Another food giveaway happening that same day will be hosted by LW’s Lawn Service and MWM Investments and Property Management. It will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Old East Pinner Street.
