SUFFOLK — Vernon William Turner passed away Oct. 30, 2012. He was born March 6, 1935, in Isle of Wight County, the son of the late Vernon Lafayette Turner and Grace Elizabeth Nurney Turner.
He graduated from Chuckatuck High School in 1953. He retired from Northrop Grumman as a nuclear welder after 37 years of service. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve for eight years.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Anne, Ellen and Thelma; brothers, Raymond, Donald and Wayne.
Vernon is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sue Taylor Turner; sister, Mary Stanley and husband Bob; sons, Tracy and wife Dianne, Andy and wife Corri; daughter Kelly and husband Herb, as well as four grandchildren, Ian, Liam, Emma and Julia Turner.
He was active at Providence United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the Faith Bible Class and the United Methodist Men. Vernon was also a member of the King’s Fork Ruritan Club.
A family man, he enjoyed being outdoors, woodworking, gardening, bike riding, watching baseball and pulling his grandchildren on his tractor.
A funeral service will be Saturday, Nov. 3 at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Garland K. Hines at Providence United Methodist Church in Suffolk. The burial will follow in Bethlehem Christian Church, Suffolk. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory in Suffolk. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations to Providence United Methodist Church. A reception will be held following the burial at Providence United Methodist Church.
