Kevin and Sandra Alston of Suffolk have announced the engagement of their daughter, Ashley Ryan Alston, to Brett Martin Heberling, son of John Jr. and Michele Heberling of Falls Creek, Pa.

Ashley is the granddaughter of Linwood Sr. and Evelyn Drake of Franklin and the late Luther and Marjorie Alston of Suffolk. Brett is the grandson of John Sr. and Kay Heberling of Falls Creek, Pa., and the late Floyd and Katherine Fustine of Brockway, Pa.

Ashley is a graduate of Nansemond River High School and Christopher Newport University, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in mathematics. She is pursuing her master’s degree in educational leadership from Arkansas State University.

Brett is a graduate of Brockway High School and Slippery Rock University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in health and physical education. He recently received his master’s degree in education from California University of Pennsylvania.

Both Ashley and Brett are employed by Suffolk Public Schools, where they met. The wedding will take place on Aug. 10, 2013, in Smithfield.
