Thomas Winborne Sr., 90, of 4602 Cogbill Road, Richmond, Va., died peacefully at his home on Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2012. A funeral service will be held at noon, Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, 2635 E. Washington St., Suffolk, Va., officiated by the Rev. Dr. Anthony Copeland. Interment will be at Albert G. Horton Jr. Veterans Memorial Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home Inc. is handling the arrangements. The family will receive visitors at 1105 Custis Road, Suffolk, Va.
He was a native of Suffolk, Va., and the son of the late John and Eartha Winborne. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas Winborne Jr.
He was a member of First Baptist Church South Richmond. He was a retiree of the Suffolk Public Schools and a World War II U.S. Army veteran. He was a well-known gospel program promoter and a founding member of the Singing Larks of Suffolk, Va.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Ethel Winborne; five daughters, Diane Gee (Clister), Barbara Walton (Lester), both of Suffolk, Va., Jewell Winborne-Coleman, of Norfolk, Va., Tonya Lynch (Antoine), of Richmond, Va., and Wanda Lawrence (Antoine), of Rocky Mount, N.C.; four sons, Steven Winborne, of Cumberland, Md., Tony Winborne (Melissa), of Suffolk, Va., Terry Winborne (Kim), of Glen Burnie, Md., Thomas Winborne (Katrina), of Portsmouth, Va.; brother, Cliff Winborne (Sarah), of Suffolk, Va.; two brothers-in-laws, Billy Johnson (Mary), of Suffolk, Va., William Johnson (Glenda), of Sellers, S.C.; sister-in-law, Mildred Bowers, of Suffolk, Va.; 19 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren; devoted friend Joe Walton, and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
