The tornado watch has expired, but showers and thunderstorms still are moving through the city and are expected to continue throughout the night.
UPDATED 3:30 p.m.
Suffolk Public Schools have canceled all after-school activities, including PTA meetings, because of the severe weather alert.
The city of Suffolk is under a tornado watch until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
A cold front moving into the area is bringing a slight risk for severe weather today, according to the National Weather Service. The main threat from the storms is damaging straight-line winds, although an isolated tornado also is possible, the weather service said.
In addition, heavy downpours will be capable of producing localized flash flooding.
Residents are encouraged to keep updated on weather alerts. If a tornado warning is issued for your area, get into a substantial structure — not a mobile home — and get into an interior room on the lowest floor.
