A Virginia Beach man has been charged with reckless driving after a Tuesday morning wreck on U.S. Route 58 that tied up traffic for hours.
Calvin Alonzo Franklin Jr. is accused of making an improper lane change that sent a tractor-trailer driven by Bobby Ray Spruill of Roper, N.C., swerving out of the way, causing it to veer across the road, smash through a guardrail, overturn and submerge in a drainage ditch at the entrance to the landfill.
According to the accident report, Franklin, who was driving a 2008 Chevrolet van, was stopped in the left turn lane across from the landfill as Franklin, driving a 2007 Peterbilt, was headed westbound in the left-hand through lane.
Franklin then attempted to merge back into traffic and pulled out in front of Spruill, according to the report. Spruill tried to avoid the van but was unable to do so. They collided in the middle lane, and the tractor-trailer skidded across the road and came to rest on its passenger side in the ditch.
The road was completely closed off and on throughout the day, and one lane was closed for several hours.
Initial reports indicated three vehicles were involved in the accident, but the report shows only two involved.
