A beloved mother and wife passed away unexpectedly. Mary Ann Chaney, daughter of the late William Pierce and his wife, the late Rose McHugh, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 14. She was 64.

Mary was born in Norfolk and raised in Suffolk, where she spent most of her life. Mary Ann was an honorably discharged service member of the U.S. Air Force, where she did aerial photography. Locally, she was also a former customer service representative for QVC Chesapeake and Panasonic. Besides her children, Mary was a great lover of her garden, her dog Bear and her cat Cassie. She also loved cooking and was well known for it, especially at the work places of her children. Mary Ann regularly participated in the local back-to-school supply drives, adopt-a-grandparent at the holidays and donated to PetSmart charities. She was a big believer in animal rights and never turned away a stray that wandered up to her door.

Mary Ann is survived by her children, Michele & Michael Generose, both of Virginia, with her divorced husband, William M. Generose, of Pennsylvania, and Theodore “Teddy” Chaney III with her second husband, Theodore “Ted” Chaney Jr., both from Suffolk. She is also survived by three sisters: Carolyn Buckelew and her husband, Paul, of New Jersey and daughter Heather and husband Calvin of Richmond and two children, Barbara Brown and husband Gene of Texas and their nine children; Linda Erickson and husband David of Florida with a daughter and two children. Also by two brothers: Patrick Pierce, of Charlottesville, and William “Billy” Pierce Jr., of Virginia.

No memorial is planned at this time. Cremation is under the direction of R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 W. Washington St. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the family or to the Suffolk Humane Society. Condolences may be registered at www.rwbakerfh.com.

She was taken too soon, but extremely loved and will be tremendously missed.

We Love You Mom!
