On Aug. 2, 2012, in the twinkling of an eye, God chose to call home Mary Evelyn Richards. She was the second of three children of the late Alma Harvey and Napoleon Carrington, of Suffolk, born on Jan. 7, 1931.

She graduated from Booker T. Washington High School in Suffolk. She later furthered her education by attending Norfolk State University and obtaining an associate degree in early childhood education.

On Dec. 31, 1953, Mary Evelyn married her childhood sweetheart, Otis Walter Richards.

In this union they loved and raised one daughter, Paula Richards Jones.

Her church affiliation was with First Baptist Church Mahan Street, where she was a member all her life. She gave her life to the Lord at an early age.

She worked in the Suffolk Public School System more than 30 years and after retiring, she worked at the Metropolitan Family Life Day Care Center for 18 years.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 1 p.m. at First Baptist Church, 112 Mahan St., Suffolk. Harris Funeral Home has been entrusted with the home going services.
