The investigation into a fatal wreck that occurred Wednesday morning still is pending, a city spokeswoman said Thursday.
Christopher Michael Fitzwater, 28, of Suffolk, died in the accident. Three others were injured.
The accident occurred at 7:59 a.m. in the 3100 block of Carolina Road.
According to the accident report, the accident occurred when 40-year-old James Barry Armstrong stopped his 1998 Chevrolet S10 in the southbound lane of Carolina Road to make a left turn into a driveway.
Fitzwater’s 2007 Chevrolet Silverado, also carrying his passenger Alexander Edick, 23, of Suffolk, was approaching the area headed north.
That’s when Willie Lee Riddick, driving a tractor-trailer, allegedly took his eyes away from the road, according to the police report. When he realized the vehicle ahead of him was stopped, he applied the brakes and skidded.
Armstrong tried to move to the right to avoid being rear-ended, but the tractor-trailer sideswiped his vehicle, jack-knifed and went into the northbound lane, where it hit Fitzwater’s truck.
His truck rolled over onto its passenger side before coming to rest.
Fitzwater, who leaves behind a wife and young daughter, will be buried Saturday.
