Matilda T. Moore, 86, passed away on July 21, 2012, in Suffolk.
Born in North Carolina, Matilda was the daughter of the late Virginia B. and Wilbur P. Thompson. She was predeceased by her husband, H. Baker Moore; brother, Archie T. Thompson; sisters, Virginia T. Stoll and Elizabeth McManners; and brother-in-law, Eugene H. Stoll Jr.
Matilda graduated from the Women’s College of UNC with a BSSA degree at the age of 19. She taught school for 39 and-a-half years —15 years in North Carolina and 24 years in Virginia. She was a dedicated member of Main Street United Methodist Church, a member of the UMW, taught Sunday school off and on throughout the years and enjoyed spending her time playing bridge and reading.
Survivors include her son, Howard Baker Moore, Jr. and wife Kathy; daughter, Jean Paige Moore Myers and husband Michael; brother, Wilbur P. Thompson and wife Gerry; grandchildren, Nicole M. Matthews and husband Michael, Nathan and Mallory Moore, Dean and Ali Myers; three great-grandchildren; and her loving niece and caregiver for the last six years, Cherie Parker.
A funeral will be conducted on Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at 11 a.m. in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory, 509 West Washington St., by the Rev. Myrtle Hatcher, with the burial to follow at the Greenville Memorial Cemetery in Emporia. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, July 24, 2012, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
